This lecture is one of a series of five lectures that will focus on the shared history of the Jewish and First Nations communities. These online lectures are hosted by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies at the Sydney Jewish Museum.

This week’s lecture will focus on the importance of acknowledging genocides in history.

Acknowledgement of genocide is important in order to show respect for the victims, to accept their dignity and to give an end to their trauma. It is important for reconciliation, for democracy and for human rights. If a society cannot face its own history, it cannot establish a democratic future. For the survivors of these historic abuses, cultural genocide is above all a “song of bereavement, a metaphor for mourning, rebuilding a shattered self-conception through the power of words.”

This lecture will be hosted by Mark Rapaport, with Avril Alba and Henry Reynolds in conversation.
