My Mother Took Me To The Cricket – Robin Devries

SKU: 609. Categories: , , .

Robin Devries journey to writing this book began with the discovery of a treasure trove of photographs taken by his father in Germany before WWII.  Seeing the ‘world that was’, the happy, full lives that his parents led in Europe set in motion a rumination on the way their escape from Nazi Germany impacted on them an din turn on Robin.  He writes of his formative years in Melbourne and that as a way to integrate into Australian society his mother ‘took him to the cricket’.

Robin writes of his years of work in different financial roles, including time with Bond Corporation and later for Kerry Packer. He discusses his personal life, connection to Judaism and his thoughts about Jews in the Diaspora. This led to Robin researching the Devries and Gomper(t)z lines of his family.

This book is a cornucopia of fascinating stories of a family line of Europeans, who ended up in Australia  so far from their roots, but where they were able to adapt once again and make a life for themselves.
