On loan from the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust (London) through the ACT Jewish Community.
This Torah comes from a small Czech town Heřmanův Městec where the Jewish settlement had had a long tradition. The local Jewish population perished during the Holocaust. Abandoned Jewish religious items such as this Torah scroll were sent for safekeeping to the Central Jewish Museum in Prague where curators bravely preserved the legacy while working under Nazi occupation. Today, there is no Jewish population left in Heřmanův Městec and the caringly restored synagogue is used as a venue for various cultural events.
