To welcome this year’s Jewish High Holy Day period, Museum Education Officer Simon Holloway will look at the festival of Sukkot.

Every Jewish festival has changed enormously over the last few millennia. Nowhere is this development more pronounced than it is with the festival of Sukkot.

In this session, we will look at Sukkot’s biblical origins, with its emphasis on pilgrimage and sacrifice, and will consider the ways in which the rabbis adapted to the loss of Jerusalem. Tracing the Talmud’s vision of Sukkot down towards the present day, we will pause to reflect on the role played by medieval Jewish mysticism in contemporary practice.
