Speaker: Dr Simon Holloway
Starting on November 3, 1943, agents of the Third Reich perpetrated one of the largest massacres of Jews to take place during the Holocaust. Claiming the lives of over 40,000 people, “Aktion Erntefest” aimed at suddenly and drastically reducing the number of Jews in sites of forced labour. This seminar will consider this massacre, perpetrated simultaneously at a number of different sites, against the backdrop of Nazi policy at the time. In so doing, we will give particular attention to the series of events that culminated in so awful a climax: the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and the uprisings in both Sobibor and Treblinka.
Dr Simon Holloway is an Education Officer at the Sydney Jewish Museum, where he runs seminars on Nazi racial science, Jewish resistance and the history of the Holocaust. He has a PhD from the University of Sydney, for which he conducted research on the Hebrew Bible. At present, Simon’s research interests include references to biblical and rabbinic literature in the archive of the Warsaw Ghetto.
