Alone in Berlin is a war drama film based on the 1947 fictionalised novel ‘Every Man Dies Alone’ by Hans Fallada, which was one of the first anti-Nazi novels written by a German author.

The film’s main characters, Otto and Anna Quangel, are based on Otto and Elise Hampel, a working class couple who wrote postcards denouncing Hitler’s government and left them in public places around Berlin. The film stars Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson and Daniel Brühl.

Following the film Dr Benjamin Nickl, from University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts, International and Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, will be in discussion with Museum Resident Historian Professor Konrad Kwiet.
