Between 15 May and 9 July of 1944, approximately 400,000 Jewish people were deported from Hungary by Hungarian officials, under the guidance of the Nazis. The majority were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and murdered in gas chambers.

During these dark months, Swedish diplomat, Per Anger, together with his colleague Raoul Wallenberg, saved thousands of Hungarian Jews by issuing them fake Swedish identification papers, that established safe houses under protection of the Swedish legation in Budapest. Both Anger and Wallenberg have been recognised with the honour of Righteous Among the Nations for saving Jewish lives.
