10th of Tevet

Today, the 18th of December 2018, is the 10th of Tevet in the Hebrew calendar.

This fast day commemorates the siege on Jerusalem by the Babylonian armies and the eventual destruction of the temple. But it has more recently also become a day of mourning for the victims of the Holocaust.

Today many people light memorial candles and recite the mourners’ prayer to bereave the loss of the temple and to mourn all those who perished in the Nazi onslaught against the Jews, and who left no surviving family members who can mourn them as individuals.

Today we remember those nameless victims.
