Holocaust Research and Contemporary Politics: a battlefield of history and memory

Speaker: Professor Dan Michman

The Sydney Jewish Museum welcomes Professor Dan Michman in partnership with Sydney University Department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies and Mandelbaum House.

This lecture examines interventions of governments and politicians in research and scholarly issues related to the Holocaust. Professor Michman draws connections between his observations and cases from recent years, including Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Israel.

He also points to the impact of political correctness, anti-Israelism, and memory constraints, such as the over-emphasis on the Righteous in official commemoration events because “we can learn something good from the Shoah”.

Professor Dan Michman is Head of the International Institute for Holocaust Research and Incumbent of the John Najmann Chair of Holocaust Studies, Yad Vashem. He is also Emeritus Professor of Modern Jewish History, and formerly (1983-2018) Chair of the Arnold and Leona Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research and Incumbent of the Abraham and Edita Spiegel Family Chair in Holocaust Research at Bar-Ilan University.
