This lecture is one of a series of ten lectures that will focus on education in times of national disasters and calamity in Jewish History. These online lectures are held in conjunction with Sydney University’s Department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies and Mandelbaum House.

This week’s lecture will focus on the new Jewish apologetic after 1492.

In this lecture, Dr Cedric Cohen Skalli will explore the ways in which Jewish leaders and rabbis like Isaac Abravanel, Abraham Saba, or Solomon ibn Verga reacted to the trauma of the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Castile and Aragon. He will present how these intellectual figures made sense of the catastrophe for themselves and for their family, but also for the scattered community of the Sephardic Exiles. Through oral and written teaching, they developed a wide range of religious strategies to reach their fellow Sephardic exiles, consoling them for recent tragedies and rebuilding their historical and messianic consciousness with biblical commentaries, historical accounts, eschatological or kabbalistic speculations.

Dr. Cedric Cohen Skalli is a lecturer of Jewish Philosophy at the University of Haifa. He is the director of the Bucerius Institute for the research of contemporary German History and Society. He published several books and many articles on Jewish thought in the Renaissance as well as in 19th and 20th century German speaking world. His new book is Cedric Cohen-Skalli, Don Isaac Abravanel: An Intellectual Biography, Brandeis University Press, 2020
