For a party that achieved little more than 35% of the vote, members of the NSDAP were acutely aware of the need to increase their popularity, but were sensitive to a widespread distaste for thuggery.
How might they use their paramilitary forces, while at the same time demonstrate that they favoured the rule of law?
How might they increase the broadness of their appeal, while at the same time marginalising large sectors of the population?
This seminar will explore the various methods employed by the NSDAP in this regard, and will consider the nature of political populism.
