This lecture is one of a series of five lectures that will focus on the shared history of the Jewish and First Nations communities. These online lectures are hosted by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies at the Sydney Jewish Museum.

This week’s lecture will focus on the importance of storytelling in understanding cultures.

Storytelling is universal to the human experience. We engage with others through stories, which are more than just a recitation of facts. As human beings, we are drawn to stories because we see ourselves reflected in them. We inevitably interpret them and understand ourselves better. Stories keep cultures alive by providing a timeless link to ancient traditions, legends, and myths. But they also connect us to universal truths about ourselves and our world. Through stories, we share passions, fears, sadness, hardships, and joys, and we find common ground with other people.

This lecture will be hosted by Ashlee Wone, with Pastor Ray Minniecon and Rabbi Benjamin Elton in conversation.
