What do apples, bees and a rams horn have in common? They are all used as symbols in the Jewish New Year festival of Rosh Hashana!

The Sydney Jewish Museum invites your class to a complimentary interactive Rosh Hashana workshop, facilitated live by a Museum Educator. Rosh Hashana will be celebrated this year on 25th September and marks the beginning of 10 days of atonement before Yom Kippur.

This program will introduce students to the traditions and symbolism associated with this important festival.

During the workshop, students will:

  1. Learn what foods are traditionally eaten and why.
  2. Hear a ‘Shofar’ (ram’s horn) being blown and what the sound represents.
  3. Meet community rabbis from different streams of Judaism talk about why the festival is important to Jewish people.
  4. Engage in a craft activity.
  5. Take home a recipe for Honey Cake customarily made for Rosh Hashana.
