Speakers: Tristan Black (Anzac Memorial), Timothy Langan (Anzac Memorial, Dr Rebecca Kummerfeld (Sydney Jewish Museum)

In honour of Remembrance Day 2020, we explore the idea of memorial museums and the ways education programs pass the responsibility of remembrance to the next generation. Tristan Black and Timothy Langan, Heads of Education at the Anzac Memorial and Dr Rebecca Kummerfeld, Head of Education at the Sydney Jewish Museum, will share the ways that their museum buildings are used to teach students about memorialisation and consider the creative ways students can share in communal representations of remembrance.

Tristan Black is Head of Learning at the Anzac Memorial. Combining his skills as an actor, voiceover artist and presenter he has been with the Anzac Memorial since August 2018. Tristan completed a combined degree in law and media at Macquarie University, and developed and performed in theatrical programs for visiting exhibitions at the Powerhouse Museum. Tristan is passionate about exploring theatre as a medium for historical empathy and enjoys imparting knowledge to students in creative ways.

Timothy Langan is Head of Learning at the Anzac Memorial. Timothy completed his BA(Hons) in Musical Theatre at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Timothy toured Australia with two theatre-in-education companies, refining his skills as an actor and presenter, integrating his passion for education through creativity. Timothy enjoys combining his love of theatre and history in his role as at the Anzac Memorial, encouraging students to discover themes of memorialisation through the creative and performing arts.

Dr Rebecca Kummerfeld is Head of Education, Wakil Chair of Education at the Sydney Jewish Museum. She completed a Ba (Hons), Master of Teaching (hons) and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. Bringing together a background in secondary teaching, education and Museum industry experience in the UK, she is passionate about object-centred learning in museum spaces. She strives to make education programs as accessible as possible, allowing audiences to meaningfully engage with the Museum collection.
