Speaker: Richard Wiesel

In late 2019 The Sydney Jewish Museum was privileged to have on show an exhibition by local Sydney photographer, Richard Wiesel.

A relative of Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Richard was granted privileged and exclusive access to the closed archives of the memorials Sachsenhausen and Ravensbruck to photograph artifacts that have never been seen, which he was able trace back to their original owner and consequently learn of their fate.

A deeply emotional guided tour of the Holocaust memorials in Berlin in 2018 moved and inspired Richard to capture images of personal items that once belonged to inmates. Working with world renowned German Historian Dr Robert Sommer, they were granted access to the archives that included artifacts found at the camps after liberation, or were donated by the survivor or their families.

‘Objects from The Concentration Camps’ is a fascinating collection of 42 shortlisted images, which are to be exhibited at museums and galleries in Europe, Russia, America, South Africa and Australia in the next 18 months.
