Dasia Black, author of Letter from my Father, has written this poignant account of her search for what may have happened to her parents during the Holocaust in Nazi occupied Poland. Her parents entrusted four-year-old Dasia to a Polish Christian woman in a desperate attempt to save her life. At the age of five she was told that her mother and father had perished, but did not know the details of their murder.

Her father wrote a letter addressed to his relatives in the United States with a postscript dated June 4, 1943, only five days before the liquidation of the ghetto of Zbaraz, asking that they become the saviours of his child in the event he and his wife did not survive the horrors. Dasia’s previous book was an autobiography with the letter at its core. This book, Zbaraz: a community extinguished, is a heartfelt and at times gut-wrenching description of the destruction of the Jewish community of the town that was her father’s birth place.

Dasia has skilfully interwoven the testimonies of the few survivors from the town and extensive documentation with her personal search.

The love and loss experienced by Dasia reveals itself in the way in which she tells of her anguish with each new discovery. The reader comes to know Dasia and the people about whom she writes in a very personal and touching way. This is a book which will stay in the reader’s mind long after they have closed the cover.
