Between 1927 and 1939 approximately 1,300 German and Austrian Jews found safe haven in Manila. The rescue effort was spear-headed by US high commissioner to the Philippines Paul V. McNutt, Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon and the Frieder brothers, a family of Jewish-American cigar manufacturers living in Manila. This lecture explores the extraordinary example of humanitarianism in the face of Nazi brutality.

Dean Kotlowski is a Professor of History at Salisbury University in Maryland, USA. He has published numerous articles on and chapters on US political and diplomatic history. He has twice been a Fulbright Scholar at De La Salle University in Manila (2008) and at the University of Salzburg, Austria (2016).
