Dr Sharhar Burla will present the lecture, which will be followed by the Israeli film – Souvenirs.
The Jewish Brigade Group was the only military unit to serve in WW II in all the Allied forces. It was an independent, national Jewish military formation, comprised mainly of Jews from Israel and had its own emblem. The skills gained in the Jewish Brigade were skills that would be put to use again during Israel’s War of Independence. However, many of the ex-brigade soldiers believe that the story of the brigade had been “hidden” by the Israeli establishment.
Dr Shahar Burla is a research associate at the SJM. He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Hebrew University and a PhD from Bar–Ilan University. His book Political Imagination in the Diaspora: TheConstruction of a Pro-Israeli Narrative was published in 2013 and he is the co-editor of the forthcoming book Australia and Israel: A diasporic, political and cultural relationship (Sussex Academic Press, 2015)
