Lunchtime Lecture – Epidemics, Pandemics and Holocaust: DataScience gives new insights

N/A

Wednesday 11 July
1.15pm

FREE

This lunchtime lecture will explore how modern DataScience is used to study the Holocaust.

The destruction of the Jewish people through industrial killing and spread of epidemics have been hugely underestimated. In this lecture, Professor Lewi Stone will demonstrate that even the best Genocide scholars still today continue to underestimate the Holocaust “murder-rate” – by a whole factor of ten.

Professor Stone will also examine how German obsession with disease was a key trigger of the Holocaust, and how simple mathematical models can reconstruct the epidemics that over-ran the approximately 40,000 European concentration camps.

Through the lens of DataScience, Professor Stone will explore how effective Jewish Medical Resistance teams brought large-scale exploding epidemics to a grinding halt.

Bio:

Lewi Stone is a Professor of Mathematical Biology in the Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University – where he has worked for more than 20 years – and the Math Department at RMIT University.
