In this Lunchtime Lecture Leon Hartwell, PhD candidate at Stellenbosch and Leipzig Universities, will discuss the life and work of remarkable lawyer Raphael Lemkin (June 24, 1900 – August 28, 1959).

This year marks 60 years since the passing on Lemkin, who was of Polish-Jewish descent and the father of the Genocide Convention.

Some scholars have described Lemkin as an oddball. Others admire him for his extraordinary negotiation skills and sophisticated campaign to convince international players to adopt ‘genocide’ as an international crime.

Bio

Leon Hartwell’s work focuses on conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation and genocide. Hartwell publishes regularly in newspapers and journals on a wide variety of political issues.

From 2012-13, Hartwell worked in Zimbabwe for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands as Senior Policy Advisor on Political and Development Cooperation. The scope of his work ranged from day to day diplomacy and political reporting to supporting peace building projects and human rights defenders. Prior to that, he worked for the Netherlands Embassy in South Africa, where he was responsible for political and development cooperation, and analyzing domestic and regional issues, including elections, peace processes, human rights abuses, and government policies on specific issues.

Hartwell holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pretoria, where he lectured in the Political Sciences Department on international relations and politics.
