Dr Harry Segal was born in Newtown, Sydney in 1921 to parents who immigrated from Safed, Israel in 1910. As the sixth of eight children, Harry tells his story of growing up in a poor household during the 1930s depression, winning a NSW State Scholarship to study Medicine at Sydney University, serving in the AIF Army Medical corps as a Regimental Medical Officer in the field in Western Australia and Bougainville during World War II, setting up a medical practice in Bondi and working for more than 17 years as a successful senior surgeon in Sydney.

He tells of his attempts to build a private hospital, an endeavor for which despite appeals to 100 local doctors to build with him, he eventually undertook alone, building one of the first purpose-built private hospitals in Australia. His attempts to build a second private hospital specializing in coronary graft bypass surgery, which would have been the first in Australia and saved hundreds of lives, was prevented by the local Council.

Harry’s story details the development of the medical field from 1937 until today, discussing the provision of medical services before Medibank, the lack of antibiotics until the 1940s, and the many amazing advances since he started studying the medical course at Sydney University in 1937.

Harry’s ultimate achievement was not success itself, but success and satisfaction from doing it “his way”, by continuing to strive and achieve what others thought was not possible.
