Boter Food Coupon

Donated by Thea Van Gastel (nee Frumau)

Donated by Thea Van Gastel (nee Frumau)

One food coupon for butter, in Dutch, used in The Netherlands during WWII.

This coupon belonged to the Frumau family, Dutch Catholics who lived in Dordrecht, Netherlands.

The Frumaus helped Jews in South Holland during the war. Thea, the oldest of six children, was nine at the start of the war. Her parents would send her to get supplies with food coupons, which required queuing for hours. She and her sister were the only ones who could safely leave the house, as her father was hiding to avoid forced labor in German factories. Thea remembers how her mother loved butter, which is why only one butter coupon remains; they used the rest. She was unaware that her parents looked after Jews until after the war.

Thea and her husband, Andre, immigrated to Australia in 1951.
